What do I need to know about vaginal delivery and cesarean section?

A vaginal delivery is the natural process of delivering your child through the birth canal. It’s typically the best route when there are no complications that would make delivery unsafe.

A cesarean section, or C-section, is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through an incision in the abdomen and uterus. While some C-sections are planned beforehand, others become necessary if concerns arise during labor.

When are vaginal delivery and cesarean section recommended?

Jersey Women’s Care Center typically recommends a vaginal delivery if:

  • Your pregnancy is low-risk
  • Your baby is in a head-down position
  • Labor is progressing normally

A cesarean section may be preferable if:

  • Your baby is in a breech or sideways position
  • You’re carrying multiples (twins or more) in certain situations
  • Your baby’s heart rate causes concern during labor
  • You have placental complications
  • Labor is not progressing as expected
  • You’ve had a previous C-section, and a repeat procedure is best for your body

Your provider will carefully evaluate your health, your baby’s condition, and any risk factors to give you the best possible recommendation.

What happens during vaginal delivery and cesarean section?

During a vaginal delivery, labor typically occurs in three stages:

  • Stage one: involves contractions that help your cervix open (dilate)
  • Stage two: when you push and deliver your baby
  • Stage three: involves delivering the placenta

Your care team supports you throughout, offering guidance on breathing, positioning, and pain management options such as epidurals.

A cesarean section is performed in an operating room. Regional anesthesia (such as a spinal or epidural) keeps you awake but comfortable.

Your provider makes a small incision in your abdomen and uterus to deliver your baby, and the procedure typically takes about 45-60 minutes, with your baby often delivered within the first 10-15 minutes.

What happens after vaginal delivery or cesarean section?

After delivery, vaginal delivery often allows for a quicker return to normal activities, while a C-section requires more healing time due to the incision. In both cases, your care team monitors you closely and provides guidance for a faster recovery.

Jersey Women’s Care Center always prioritizes a safe, healthy delivery for both you and your baby. For patient-centered support, call Jersey Women’s Care Center today or book your next visit online.
