A colposcopy is a closer look at your cervix, vagina, and vulva using a special magnifying device called a colposcope. Jersey Women’s Care Center may recommend it after an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test.
The colposcope stays outside your body and simply provides a magnified, well-lit view of your cervical tissue. If your provider sees any areas that look unusual, they may take a small tissue sample (biopsy) for further testing.
Common reasons for a colposcopy include:
Colposcopy protects your long-term health by catching and monitoring changes early.
In addition to early detection, the vital advantages include:
It provides a clearer, more detailed evaluation than a Pap smear alone.
If everything looks normal, you’ll have reassurance and a plan for routine follow-up.
If they find abnormal cells, your provider can recommend the right treatment quickly.
Treating abnormal cells early can help prevent cervical cancer from developing.
Your Jersey Women’s Care Center provider performs your colposcopy in the office, and it’s similar to a pelvic exam. The entire appointment usually takes about 15-30 minutes.
You lie on an exam table, and your provider gently inserts a speculum to view your cervix, positioning the colposcope just outside (but not touching) your vagina.
They may apply a mild solution to your cervix to highlight any abnormal areas. This can cause a slight tingling or cooling sensation.
If they notice any suspicious areas, they can collect a small biopsy for safety. If so, you might feel a brief pinch or mild cramping during this step, but your provider strives to keep you comfortable.
After the procedure, you may experience light spotting or mild cramping for a day or two, especially if your provider collected a biopsy sample, but there should be little to no downtime. Instead, you’ll have answers and greater peace of mind.
