What is a laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy at Jersey Women’s Care Center is a minimally invasive procedure your OB/GYN provider uses to diagnose certain women’s health concerns or treat common problems affecting your reproductive organs.

They use a laparoscope (thin, lighted tube containing a camera) to complete the procedure with superior precision and accuracy, ensuring flawless results.

What is a laparoscopy used for?

Your provider may suggest a laparoscopy to diagnose and/or treat:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Polyps
  • Endometriosis
  • Small tumors
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Heavy uterine bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Uterine, ovarian, cervical, and other gynecological cancers
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Painful periods
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

This procedure can also perform tubal ligation and reversal, biopsies, urethral and vaginal reconstruction, hernia repair, and more.

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less scarring
  • Utmost precision and accuracy

Is a laparoscopy right for me?

You’ll meet with your Jersey Women’s Care Center provider to determine if you’re a candidate for laparoscopy, robotic surgery, or similar procedures. They review your medical history and symptoms, complete physical and pelvic exams, and may order blood work, an ultrasound, or other diagnostic tests.

How can I prepare for a laparoscopy?

Follow the Jersey Women’s Care Center team's instructions before your procedure. Make arrangements for someone to drive you home, avoid eating and drinking the morning of the procedure, and stop taking medications or dietary supplements if asked to.

What happens during a laparoscopy?

You’ll receive anesthesia to help you fall asleep or relax before your laparoscopy. Your specialist makes tiny incisions and inserts a thin, lighted tube into your pelvis to view, repair, or remove tissues. The procedure might last 30-60 minutes or up to several hours.

What can I expect after a laparoscopy?

You’ll rest in a recovery area after the procedure and may be able to go home the same day. Follow your postprocedure instructions, like getting plenty of sleep, taking medications as directed, and following up with Jersey Women’s Care Center. You might notice tenderness, vaginal bleeding, or other temporary side effects. Call the office anytime with questions.
