A myomectomy is a surgical gynecological procedure that removes uterine fibroids, noncancerous growths that develop in up to 77% of women during their childbearing years. While not always a cause for concern, fibroids can cause bothersome symptoms and might interfere with your ability to become pregnant.
Removing fibroids at Jersey Women’s Care Center can ease the following concerns caused by fibroids:
Removing fibroids can help restore your fertility if you’re trying to get pregnant or would like to become pregnant in the future.
You’ll first meet with your Jersey Women’s Care Center provider to determine if you’re a candidate for a myomectomy. They discuss your symptoms and medical history, complete a pelvic exam, and may order a pelvic ultrasound or imaging procedures, a hysteroscopy, a laparoscopy, or other diagnostic procedures.
Your OB/GYN specialist might ask you to avoid certain medications or dietary supplements before your myomectomy. You may also need to stop eating and drinking before your scheduled procedure. Have someone available to drive you home afterward.
The Jersey Women’s Care Center team uses advanced surgical technologies and procedures to eliminate uterine fibroids. Anesthesia helps you fall asleep or stay relaxed.
Your provider uses a thin, lighted tube with a camera (laparoscope) to view the inside of your uterus and eliminate fibroids during a laparoscopic procedure. Or, they use robotic arms and a computer console to complete a robotic myomectomy.
Your specialist might make tiny incisions in your abdomen or insert specialized tools through your vagina and cervix to reach any fibroids in your uterus. The procedure might last about 2-3 hours.
After a myomectomy, you can rest in a recovery area while your provider monitors you. You can often go home the same day. Expect light spotting for several days up to six weeks. Gradually ease back into normal daily activities, but avoid sex for six weeks, and follow up as needed.
Schedule an evaluation at Jersey Women’s Care Center by phone or online today to determine if a myomectomy is right for you.
