Pregnancy Consultation Q & A

Why would I need a pregnancy consultation?

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, a pregnancy consultation sets you up for the best possible chances of a successful outcome. The OB/GYNs at Jersey Women’s Care Center have extensive experience helping their patients start healthy families, and they’ve found that a little planning on the front end can pay off considerably.

This is especially true if you have a pre-existing medical condition or you’ve had trouble getting pregnant or carrying a baby to term in the past. As well, if you fall into other high-risk categories, such as advanced maternal age (over 35), your OB/GYN works with you to mitigate these risk factors.

Even if you’re starting from an enviable position of great health, your doctor will go over a few things that you can do to best prepare yourself for pregnancy.

What happens during my pregnancy consultation?

When you first sit down with either Dr. Ramirez or Dr. Hou, you will spend some time going over your medical and vaccination history as well as your family’s medical history. From there, the doctor will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, your diet, and any medications you’re taking. During this discussion, your doctor will make suggestions about how you can improve your health to ready your body for pregnancy, which may include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Cutting out alcohol
  • Losing weight
  • Exercising
  • Improving nutrition

Your doctor will also start you on supplements like folic acid to promote the health of your future baby.

Are there any tests during a pregnancy consultation?

This answer to this depends upon your health. As part of your pregnancy consultation, the team at Jersey Women’s Care Center records your vital statistics, such as your heart rate and blood pressure, in order to establish a valuable baseline of your health. From there, your doctor may recommend additional testing, such as STD screenings and Pap tests.

Ultimately, your doctor recommends testing based on your unique history and lifestyle. Rest assured, your successful pregnancy is her primary goal at all times.
