Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is an approach to surgery that relies on specialized equipment and tiny cameras that enable Dr. Ramirez to perform complex procedures in small spaces using only minimal (or no) incisions. When it comes to gynecologic issues, there are several approaches to minimally invasive surgery, including:

Vaginal

Dr. Ramirez is able to avoid surface incisions altogether by accessing the surgical site through your vagina.

Hysteroscopic

With this type of minimally invasive technique, Dr. Ramirez accesses your uterus using a hysteroscope, which she threads through your vagina and cervix.

Laparoscopic

For laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Ramirez makes tiny incisions in your lower abdomen through which she threads a camera that delivers real-time images and small, specialized instruments to do the work.

Robotic surgery

In the perfect blend of technology and human experience, Dr. Ramirez uses robotic arms to perform complex gynecologic procedures, which she controls and guides using 3D imaging, affording her superior precision and accuracy.

What are the most common types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery?

Using minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Ramirez is able to perform a number of procedures, including:

  • LEEP
  • Treatment of endometriosis
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Fibroid removal
  • Hysterectomy
  • Cyst removal
  • Tubal ligation
  • Diagnostic hysteroscopy and laparoscopy

In most cases, Dr. Ramirez is able to perform these procedures on an outpatient basis, so you’re free to return home on the same day.

What is LEEP?

LEEP, which stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure, is a treatment that Dr. Ramirez uses to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. Instead of a scalpel, Dr. Ramirez uses a thin wire loop to remove the outermost layer of your cervix. This procedure is an ideal way to eliminate any suspicious cells from your cervix that may turn precancerous or cancerous down the road.

Dr. Ramirez performs the LEEP in her offices, and the procedure usually only takes a few minutes. As your cervix heals after the surgery, you may experience abnormal discharge and bleeding, but these typically resolve themselves in a few weeks.
